Pensions and risk

I have noticed too many people takng a high level of risk with their pension savings that they clearly do not understand or appreciate.

I have recently seen 2 poeple in their late 50's that have put money into exotic schemes promising 10% return or massive capital growth, and the chances of it happening are slim.

Succesfull smart people are seduced by the marketing blurb and are influenced by the continued "pension crisis" headlines in the press.

I use this example to illustrate the risks.  Its your money but please for Gods sake do the research as mistakes can be costly.

A company last year was promising 20% capital growth and where being marketed in a proffessional way by a UK company.

But......

The company had no history of performance.

It was not FSA authorised.

The fund size it was marketing was less than  £5 million.

A large part of the fund held in strange geographies around the world.

The holding company based outside the UK.

So essentially this is a company that if it goes wrong, you cannott get any compensation for, nobody to talk to in this country who is responsible.

This is a company that had hundreds of thousands of pounds invested by starry eyed punters eager to get their 20%.

As I said some investments not regulated may be fine but as ever buyer beware.

If the "cap" fits

Luxury Small Caps may still be a place to generate big investment returns

BRIC'ing it ??

So where are this years emerging economies that are going to make you a fortune ?

ISA or Pension Choices

There has been as always, loads of press about getting your ISA allowance used up before the end of the tax year.

It is obvioulsy a good idea (please explain), but what if you haven't got a few thousand pounds hanging around to invest ?

Should you divert money away from you pension savings instead ?

Why does everybody hate pensions

Why is the perception of pensions today a complete waste of time ? What do people really understand about the much copied phrase "pensions crisis" ?  Why don't financial advisers fight this issue ?
